Looking at the diary…

Book the hall

Sunday

Two services, and what happens in each, minute by minute.

Printed because the thing that keeps people outside is not belief, it is not knowing what they will be asked to do. The answer is nothing. 75 minutes, and we finish when we say we will

08:00 · 75 minutes

The eight o'clock

Older congregation, no band, no screens. The organ plays, we say the prayers together from the book, and the sermon is about fifteen minutes.

08:00 doors and the bell · 08:05 opening prayer · 08:15 two readings · 08:30 sermon · 08:50 prayers for the parish and the sick, by name · 09:05 offering and notices · 09:15 out, and coffee in the porch.

  • BandNo, organ only
  • ChildrenWelcome, and it is a quiet hour
  • Communionfirst Sunday of the month, both services
  • Out by08:00 plus 75 minutes, and we mean it

10:30 · 90 minutes

The half ten

Louder, younger, and busier. Children stay in for the start and then go through to the upper room; if you would rather keep yours with you, keep them, nobody minds noise.

10:30 four songs · 10:50 children out · 10:55 reading and testimony · 11:10 sermon · 11:35 prayer at the front for anyone who wants it · 11:50 notices and offering · 12:00 out into the yard, where there is always something to eat.

  • ChildrenCrèche from 10:15, or keep them with you

Before you come

The practical answers.

Everything a stranger asks in the porch, answered before you get to the porch.

What do I wear?

At eight, most people are dressed up because they always have been. At half ten, most are not. Neither service notices.

Where do I sit?

Anywhere. Nothing is reserved, including the front row, which is why it is always empty.

Will anyone speak to me?

Someone will say good morning at the door because they say it to everyone. Nobody will ask your name, put you on a list, or ring you afterwards. If you want to be spoken to, stand in the yard after the half ten and you will be.

Parking

Eleven spaces in the yard, kept for people who cannot walk far; the road takes the rest. On the second Sunday of the month the road is busy with the market, so come at ten rather than twenty past.

Money

There is an offering in both services. Visitors are not expected to give anything, and nobody watches the bag. Where it goes is published every quarter.
